Why Walking May Be the Best Medicine After 50 Years

"Enoch walked faithfully with God..." — Genesis 5:24

If someone asked me to recommend just one exercise for most adults over 50, my answer would be simple.

Walk.

No expensive equipment.

No complicated choreography.

No gym membership required.

Just one foot in front of the other.

Walking has been part of my life and my ministry for many years.

I've created walking workouts for thousands of people because I've seen firsthand how something so simple can change lives.

Walking isn't just exercise.

It's freedom.

Walking Is for Everyone

One of the things I love most about walking is that almost anyone can do some version of it.

You can walk outside.

You can walk inside your home.

You can power walk.

You can march in place.

You can walk slowly.

You can walk with music.

You can walk while praying.

You simply begin where you are.

Walking meets you there.

Physical Benefits of Walking

Walking is one of the safest and most effective forms of exercise for adults over 50.

It helps:

  • Strengthen your heart

  • Improve circulation

  • Support healthy blood pressure

  • Burn calories

  • Improve endurance

  • Strengthen leg muscles

  • Increase balance

  • Support healthy joints

  • Improve mobility

  • Help with weight management

The best part?

Walking is low impact, making it easier on the knees and hips than many high-impact activities.

Walking Helps the Mind

Exercise doesn't just strengthen muscles.

It refreshes the mind.

Many people tell me they feel happier after walking.

They sleep better.

They think more clearly.

Stress begins to melt away.

Problems don't always disappear.

But somehow they don't seem quite as overwhelming after a good walk.

There is something wonderfully calming about moving your body while giving your mind room to breathe.

Walking Nourishes the Soul

Some of my favorite conversations with God have happened while walking.

Sometimes I don't even know what to pray.

I simply begin walking.

Before long, gratitude begins to replace worry.

Hope replaces discouragement.

Peace replaces anxiety.

Walking becomes worship.

The rhythm of each step reminds me that God has been walking beside me through every season of life.

Why I Love Walking Workouts

Many people think walking workouts are too simple.

I disagree.

Walking workouts are practical.

They're fun.

They're encouraging.

Most importantly, they're accessible.

Whether we're marching to gospel music, celebrating Christmas in July, or enjoying an old-school fitness beat, we're doing more than exercising.

We're building healthier lives together.

That's why I continue creating new walking workouts every week.

Getting Started

If you're new to walking, remember this:

You don't have to walk fast.

You don't have to walk far.

You simply have to begin.

Try this simple plan:

  • Week One: Walk for 10 minutes.

  • Week Two: Increase to 15 minutes.

  • Week Three: Aim for 20 minutes.

  • Week Four: Celebrate how much stronger you've become.

If you need to march in place while holding onto a chair, that's okay.

If you need to take breaks, that's okay.

Every step counts.

Walking Together

One of the greatest blessings of my ministry is knowing that people around the world are walking together.

Some join me from their living rooms.

Others from community centers.

Some exercise in wheelchairs.

Others stand beside their spouses.

We may live in different places.

But every workout reminds us that we're never walking alone.

A Final Encouragement

Walking teaches us something about life.

We don't reach our destination in one giant leap.

We arrive one faithful step at a time.

The same is true of our health.

The same is true of our faith.

The same is true of our purpose.

So tomorrow morning, lace up your shoes—or simply stand where you are—and take that first step.

God isn't asking you to sprint.

He's inviting you to keep walking.

One step.

One prayer.

One day at a time.

This Week's Walking Challenge

Walk for at least 15 minutes three times this week.

As you walk, choose one thing to thank God for every five minutes.

By the time you finish, your body will have moved, your heart will be encouraged, and your spirit will have spent time with the One who walks with you every day.
