7 Exercise Myths That Keep Adults Over 50 Stuck

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." —

2 Timothy 1:7

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to believe something simply because you've heard it over and over again?

When it comes to exercise after 50, there are plenty of myths that quietly convince people to stop moving. Sadly, these misconceptions rob many adults of the joy, strength, and freedom that come from living an active life.

After teaching exercise classes for more than three decades, I've heard them all. Today, let's replace those myths with truth.

Myth #1: "I'm Too Old to Start Exercising"

This is perhaps the biggest myth of them all.

I've watched people begin their fitness journey in their sixties, seventies, eighties, and even nineties.

They didn't become professional athletes.

They simply became healthier versions of themselves.

God doesn't put an expiration date on taking care of the body He has entrusted to us.

The best day to begin is today.

Myth #2: "Exercise Has to Hurt to Work"

Many people believe soreness equals success.

Not true.

Exercise should challenge you, but it shouldn't punish you.

A good workout leaves you feeling energized, not defeated.

Some of the most effective workouts are low-impact walking, chair exercises, stretching, and light strength training.

Remember, consistency beats intensity.

Myth #3: "I Need a Gym Membership"

You can certainly join a gym if you enjoy it.

But you don't have to.

I've helped thousands of people improve their health right in their living rooms.

A sturdy chair.

A pair of light dumbbells.

A little open space.

That's often all you need.

Movement matters far more than location.

Myth #4: "Walking Isn't Real Exercise"

I smile every time I hear this one.

Walking is one of the most effective forms of exercise available.

It strengthens the heart.

Improves circulation.

Builds endurance.

Supports weight management.

Lifts your mood.

And it's gentle on the joints.

Never underestimate the power of putting one foot in front of the other.

Myth #5: "I'm Too Out of Shape"

Everyone starts somewhere.

No one wakes up one morning in great shape.

Progress begins with one decision.

One walk.

One stretch.

One workout.

Don't compare your Chapter One to someone else's Chapter Twenty.

Celebrate your own journey.

Myth #6: "Strength Training Is Dangerous"

When done properly, strength training is one of the best things adults over 50 can do.

It helps maintain muscle.

Improves balance.

Supports healthy bones.

Makes everyday activities easier.

You don't have to lift heavy weights.

Even light resistance can produce meaningful results over time.

Myth #7: "It's Too Late to Make a Difference"

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Every healthy choice matters.

Every walk matters.

Every workout matters.

Every stretch matters.

Your body begins responding the moment you begin moving.

You may not notice dramatic changes overnight.

But over weeks and months, those small steps add up to something remarkable.

What I've Learned

At 70 years old, I no longer exercise to impress anyone.

I exercise because I want to continue serving God, encouraging others, and enjoying the life He's given me.

That's what Temple Maintenance is all about.

It's not about chasing youth.

It's about honoring the gift of today.

This Week's Myth-Busting Challenge

Ask yourself:

Which myth have I been believing?

Now replace it with one simple action.

Take a walk.

Stretch.

Lift a light weight.

Join a chair workout.

Don't wait until tomorrow.

Start today.

A Final Encouragement

Fear says, "You're too late."

Faith says, "Take the first step."

Your age isn't your limitation.

Your mindset might be.

Choose hope.

Choose movement.

Choose to honor God by caring for the body He has entrusted to you.

Because it's never too late to begin.
